The Trough Direct

Boulder

Flagstaff Mountain
A pretty problem, with a pretty bad landing at parts, hard jumbled crimps, this problem tore up my tips and strained my tendons more than a handful of times. Can't wait to try the left exit. I saw 5 different climbers try it 5 different ways and everyones beta seemed similarly difficult.

3 of us sent in one session, but each of us had different beta, and all three of us were different heights. A great problem. Crimpy, beta intense, highball a bit.

Finally sent this D@mn route. First session on it at 17 years old, I backed down from halfway through the mantel at the top, pumped and scared out of my mind. Finally sent, sweet relief. Same trip as sending Orbital Mechanics, good times.

Happy to send, this thing really intimidated me for years. 3 "sessions".

9 year off and on (mostly off) project. 6 moves, including foot movements. Topout not required. Sent on a humid 60 degree day, with rain sprinkling (the majority of the climb was protected as it is overhung). Almost backed down from topping out at the lip. Found loose dirt on slopey holds, and didn't want to fall, but pushed through the fear on the V0- topout. Thanks Jack Dixon for showing me this route, I still haven't climbed the v9 non-eliminant version; "Reef Direct", hah! Probably close to 100 tries on this route. Message me if you want beta. Grateful for being able to complete this climb, thank you Max Munchinski for re-stoking my fire a bit. As for the grade the route seems harder than other v10's I have tried, but I did send in sub-optimal conditions. Possibly v10 instead of 11, though that isn't the most important part. grateful for the experiences I had surrounding this problem.

One of the best ever, surely. 5 tries or so, 1 or 2 pads I think? no spotter for the second half of the problem, he was busy trying to get pictures!

Fountain Red
Saw it through the forest my first time in fountain red, caught my eye like a beautiful thing will. This is my favorite style of boulder, scooped slab to vert to overhang, topout. Got lucky on the send, threw for the lip and missed by a foot but latched a hidden 2 finger pocket up and right from the crimps. Insane, first v10 I sent, 5 tries or so. The other side of the boulder has another beautiful problem, a v7 named Mills Lane.

I only vaguely remember sending this problem. But I remember it was a fight, and figuring out the technical side, the beta, was a fun challenge. Pretty.
