Hiisikallio is a nice addition to the rope climbing crags close to the capital, located in Nummela at the south edge of the Hiidenvesi lake. The crag can be reached in about 40 minutes from Helsinki and has a easy 3 minute approach and plenty of parking space.
The cliff is east and north-facing, meaning it's in the shade most of the day. The downside of that is that it's not the fastest crag to dry after the winter. During the summer though, you can find dry routes 8-12 hours after rain has ended.
The crag is located on the land of Vuorelan koulukoti, and the development of the crag has been done with the helpful support of Vuorela. Vuorelan koulukoti is a state-run home-school for troubled youngsters. Do not approach the koulukoti and never drive onto Vuorelantie.
The cliff ranges in height from 10 meters to 25 meters, and is mostly slabby, with vertical sections and a couple of roofs. The rock quality is mostly of good high-friction granite, with lots of small features such as edges and micro-pockets as well as jugs and ledges. As is typical for many crags in Finland, routes are cruxy, with sections of easier climbing with good rests in between cruxes. Most routes are bolted, but there are also a few cracks to cater for the tradsters. All routes are equipped with bolted anchors and there are also rappel anchors up on the top to facilitate access to harder to reach top anchors. The top can be reached from either side of the crag as well as between sectors 1 and 2.
There are several great quality sandy beaches close to the parking spot. The nearest one is right after new black house, and the next one is a few 100 meters further away. The nearest official beach is at the opposite side of bay. There is a K-Market in the village, 2 km before reaching the parking.
The crag was developed during 2023 and the spring 2024 and the development continues. Sector 1 so far has no opened routes, and there are closed projects also on most other sectors. Most routes have not seen many repeats so the grades might be off - be sure to add your subjective view on the grade when ticking the routes!
