Rare chunks of Swiss sandstone, nestled in the beech woods of a popular hiking / picnic spot outside of Saarnen. The rock quality varies greatly from pure choss through to Joes Valley-esque with unique shapes and slashes. Unfortunately given the location, many of the boulders are often covered in moss and vegetation - you are well advised to bring a brush (or two!). Be careful also of ticks. While there is potential for more lines, and the best lines are really good (Swiss Love Story a 5 star line) this location will likely mainly appeal to locals looking for an alternative to places further afield and willing to spend some effort brushing…
Description
History
Chernwald (or Kernwald) is a border forest between the two half-cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden. A prehistoric landslide from the Stanserhorn created these boulders interspersed amongst the trees.
The first ascent of Swiss Love Story was in 2021. However bouldering happened here before, with little white arrows found on Boulder 1 and the Jurassic World boulder in particular. We’ve left these lines included in this guide with “?” names and guesses at grades (where we’ve been able to climb them!). Should you have info on any lines new or old please do share!
