Koh Samui is well-known for its beaches, crystal clear water and picturesque views but it also hosts a lot of potential for bouldering and sport climbing. Unfortunately there is yet very little to none developed climbing on the island. If you want to come to Thailand for climbing there are much better options than Koh Samui. However if you just happen to come here for a holiday then pack your climbing shoes and chalk bag and enjoy some holiday bouldering on a beautiful beach. After the climbing you can take a refreshing swim or snorkel around to look for corals and exotic marine animals.

Rock type here is very rough granite, similar to more well known boulders on Koh Tao. Some of the boulders cannot be climbed during high tide or large waves but there is always something to be climbed. Boulders will dry very quickly after the rain. Koh Samui has no place to rent crash pads but don’t bother as nearly all the boulders are climbable without as the landings are mostly soft sand. However it is recommended to have a spotter if you are climbing any higher boulders or if the landing does not seem perfect. All sit starts in this topo are done from a beach towel if not otherwise indicated. On boulders nearest to shore the level of sand can vary quite a much so the difficulty may change accordingly.

Coral Cove is a very family friendly and usually a very quiet beach. It is quite secluded as it is surrounded only by two small resorts and most of the people visiting the beach are their customers. During strong winds the waves can be too big for a pleasant swimming.

The best season to travel here depends on your personal preferences but usually the dry and cool season is preferred. It starts somewhere around December/January and lasts till February/March. Monsoon season varies every year but generally it is somewhere between September and early December. However it is usually possible to climb even during monsoon season as the rain does not last the whole day.

From Koh Samui you can also easily reach more established climbing crags in Koh Tao with a ferry that takes between 1.5 – 4 hours.
