Description

A short, steep crag with hard routes and some even harder projects. Surfside is not much to look at, at first glance, but it is definitely worth a visit if you like steep bouldery routes. Now that the crag has been almost completely ARFed, thanks to the Somerset West and Stellenbosch climbing community, Surfside should definitely gain in popularity and see more climbers working these powerful test pieces.

Gordon's Bay

The area is access sensitive!

🔴 Access
Access to this crag is sensitive. It was temporarily closed for quite a few years due to the danger of rocks falling on the road and people parking on the verge of the road directly beneath the crag. Please respect other people using the Steenbras road and DO NOT park beneath the crag. Also, be careful not to dislodge any rocks while climbing there.

🚗 How to get there
From Cape Town, take the N2 to Somerset West. Continue through Somerset West and, as you approach Sir Lowry’s Pass, you will see a Shell garage on the right. After this, turn right at the next set of traffic lights to Gordon’s Bay/Kleinmond. Drive all the way down to a T-junction and turn left onto the R44 to Kleinmond. Continue along this road for a few kilometers, then turn left at the Steenbras Dam turn-off. Follow the steep, windy road for about 2 kilometres to the crag on your right. DO NOT park beneath the crag, but rather a few hundred metres after the crag and walk from there.
