Description

Note: Most of the boulders have been cleaned and climbed a long time ago, but a lot of the names and initial gradings have been forgotten. (Read: History)

Kåsen is a small and concentrated bouldering area just south of Oppdal. Some of the boulders are quite tall, but the landings are mostly good. The non-existent approach and compact layout makes Kåsen perfect for a quick session and its also kid friendly. Rock quality is not the best, and can be sharp and a little flaky on some of the boulders.

Navigation by car: Take off from the E6 in the first roundabout if coming from south (Third if coming from the north) Take left in the traffic light junction, and left again towards the industryarea (by Spar), drive over the bridge and turn right in the first junction. Follow the road until you reach a parking space on the right side, while the other small parking lies 100 meters further in. On the left side of the road (towards allmannberget) you will find the boulders super close. In the trees you will also see the remainders from the "North Shore" cycle path made by local cyclists.

A visit to the best climbing related store in the area, VPG (Vertical Playground) is also a must on your visit in Oppdal.

History

People have been climbing on the big boulders in Kåsen since the late 1990's. Since most of the boulders were cleaned and climbed back then they may need some rebrushing. It is mainly the climbing community in Oppdal (based of VPG) who developed the area, people such as Erik Aalde, Geir Plassen, Rune Kvalsnes and many others should be credited💪. There are also remains of the, now old, north shore cycle trail scattered around the rocks. In its time it was a quite impressive piece of work.
