Description

The Liban Quarry offers climbing on long, vertical routes in the center of Krakow. It is one of the most popular climbing spots in the city. The most important information to start with is that some climbing in the Liban Quarry requires a permit so please check the access section.

The area consists of three climbing sectors. The central one is called 'El Pułkownik', the right one is called 'Zarząd Zieleni' (both require permission to enter) and the newest, right one is called 'Ściana Słońca' (entry without permission). The quarry area is quite sunny, so the best time to climb here is spring and autumn.

All routes are well insured with glued-in rings. The walls for the routes have been thoroughly cleaned, but due to the fact that it was a quarry, we recommend caution and climbing with a helmet.

The quarry itself has quite an interesting history. It is a wild place for being so close to the city centre, but it is loved by walkers. Please keep in mind that you are entering the quarry at your own risk.

History

The name of the quarry comes from the name of Bernard Liban, who opened a lime kiln here in 1873. In 1942–44 the Nazi occupant turned the stone quarry into a penal labour camp for Poles. In 1993 Steven Spielberg used Liban as the set of all the scenes from Schindler's List. Currently, this area is under the care of the Municipal Greenery Board in Krakow.

In Liban, secured climbing routes have existed since 2004. The first sector to be created here was El Pułkownik (central wall). In 2014, after a thorough cleaning, a new ‘Zarząd Zieleni’ sector was added on the right wall. Note that both of these places require a permit to enter.
In 2025, the right side, called 'Ściana Słońca', was also cleaned and prepared for climbers. As it is outside the fenced area, you can climb here without a permit.

The area is access sensitive!

Some climbing in the Liban Quarry requires a permit. This applies to the ‘El Pułkownik’ and ‘Zarząd Zieleni’ sectors. They are located on the premises of the Municipal Greenery Plant.
The third sector ‘Ściana Słońca’, accessible via a different path, located outside the fence, is accessible without a permit. You can reach it by following the path marked in green on the map.

It is best to park in front of the gate of the Krakow Greenery Authority. There are free spaces there. The access to the sectors is short and easily accessible. A red path leads to the restricted sectors, a green path to the publicly accessible ones [see map].
Also possible to arrive by public transport.

HOW TO GET PERMIT?
In 2023, an agreement was signed between the climbers and the owner of the land. A permit is required for sectors located on the grounds of the Municipal Greenery Board, which can be obtained by filling out a form available periodically on the website: https://pza.org.pl/kamieniolom-krakow
Agreement [PDF]: https://wspinanie.pl/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/porozumienie_liban_nasze_skaly_11-09-2023.pdf
When entering the grounds of the Greenery Board, you must confirm your presence at the guardhouse. This does not apply to the 'Sun Wall' sector.
