Description

📚 Meviksteinen is also covered in the guidebook "Arctic Circle Bouldering" from Nov. 2019.

🌍 Mevik is a small settelment in the west of Gildeskål municipality by the coast south of Bodø. It is an area of slow paced life and beautifull mountains. And the evenings and sunsets here are amazing. Behind the houses and fields are scattered blocks in the open that are partly developed. But one block that stands out is the "white" Meviksteinen sticking out of the pineforest to the west, which you can see from the road comming from Bodø.

🧗‍♀️⛰ The quiality of the rock is as good as in gets and the shapes on Meviksteinen are great. "Monumentet over Nordland" is one of the best 7B+'s you'll find around Bodø and in Nordland when it is dry. The landings are flat and two pads will do the trick maybe combined with a small starter pad. Unfortunately the location of the block makes it slow drying as it is in the shade for most of the day, and also because of a thick layer of moss on top. Especially the crack on "Monumentet.." is notoriously wet even after several days of dry wether. But when you hit those long spells of dry windy days don't hesitate to go. The few lines here are of very high quiality! So far a good handfull of easier lines have been developed in the open behind the village up to the low 6's. THere tands to be few obvious holds on the rackfaces so you often climb on slopers or the edges of the blocks.

👶 The area is somewhat child friendly and you can bring a stroller with terrain going tyres right up next to Meviksteinen. You can't bring a stroller to the block out in the open but it's fine to bring kids who can be caried or walk by themselfs.

🛏 For sleeping there is a campground in nearby Reipå but you can also find some good wildcamping places for a tent or a campervan nearby.

History

Meviksteinen was found and developed by Rasmus Bølling in 2018. A few projects still remain on it as of 2024. THe boulders in the open just south of the village was developed by a visiting German, Viktor Eckel, and his family and friends in the summer of 2024. More lines is still possible to develop there.
