History

La Rochette is an area of great biological importance
(SGIB 1025)
Until the end of the last century, this site was used as a quarry for
the extraction of Famennian sandstone. What remains is an amphitheatre-
shaped quarry, bordered by cliffs of up to 80 metres
high.
In 1997, the bottom of the quarry was almost completely covered
with water. The site was then quite popular with hikers, fishermen,
swimmers and even divers... But ten years later, when there was no
more water to be seen, the site hardly received any visitors... until
the Belgian Rebolting Team arrived on site!
In 2017, a passionate team of rock workers started the ecological management
of the site. The northern rock face was cleared of unstable boulders
and equipped with bolts to make rock climbing possible in a safe way. A
highline installation was installed in the western part of the site. This way, a new
generation of sport enthousiasts can enjoy this beautiful quarry, with respect for
nature and the local economy.
