Description

Spriana is a characteristic small village located in the beautiful Valmalenco valley. Many of the houses are built in stones, making it really interesting to visit. But we are climbers, so we have to focus on the nice boulder area just a few steps from Spriana center.
We are talking about a bunch of big boulders scattered in a chestnut grove that are really close to the car park (2-5 mins) and offer about 70 problems of various styles and difficulties. There are slabs and overhangs on a great gneiss that is quite different from the typical serpentine rock of the valley. This particular rock requires cold temperatures to guarantee a good grip, so Spriana is generally frequented during the winter.
Boulders have nice shapes and features hundreds of crimps and slopers. Grades go from 4 to 8A.
After the Summer season it is really common to find a lot of moss on the boulders. Do not worry, it can be easily brushed away and you can take this opportunity to have a great warm up before climbing!

The boulder area of Spriana is well maintained by the municipality and it is suitable for families. There are picnic facilities and a nice playground close to the chestnut grove. You will surely enjoy a nice climbing day here.

History

The area was initially developed by the alpine guide Michele Comi, supported by Daniele Bernasconi and Chicco Franchi. Spriana has been highly frequented by local climbers, that discovered new lines and made it one of the most famous bouldering areas of the valley. Among the many climbers we can remember Ricky Colombo, Luca Maspes, Daniele Pigoni, Nicola Bruseghini, Simone Pedeferri and Christian Gianatti).
In 2005, the municipality of Spriana enhanced the area by setting up picnic zones and boulder maps. Please respect the chestnut grove.
