Gerola is a large boulder area located in the Gerola valley. It is one of the newest spots in the lower part of Valtellina and in the last years gained a lot of fame thanks to the boulder event called GerolaSass. This bouldering area is less frequented but it has nothing to envy to the super famous Masino valley, known for the Melloblocco, which is only a few kilometers away. Let’s explain why Gerola is so attractive!
The area is part of the Orobie Valtellinesi natural park, grouping glacials valleys surrounded by summits from 2000 to 3000 meters of altitude. Trekking through the pine forests, along the rivers and the meadows are really entertaining.
The boulders here feature a unique type of reddish conglomerate, called Verrucano Lombardo. They offer hundreds of interesting and various problems. The average altitude is over 1000 meters above sea level. Landings of the boulders are generally good, thanks also to the work of the organizers of the GerolaSass event who have prepared comfortable terraces.
Trails are evident and comfortable. Try to not get out of them and harm nature.
The boulders of the Valle sector can be easily reached by walking from Gerola Alta village. Some of them are located among the houses, others by the river sides. This first sector counts over 100 problems with a wide range of difficulties, from super easy problems that suit children and beginners to harder ones, perfect for advanced climbers. Boulders are sunny and you will find good conditions during the winter.
Sector Vallise is located in a nice forest at the exit of Gerola Alta. Boulders are more shady and they can be climbed also during the summer and the mid-seasons. There are also some challenging sport routes that are generally quite bouldery.
Gerola is amazing and we are sure that in the future it will become much more popular. The environment is beautiful and it is good for families. The potential for new improvements is still huge! Some boulders are on private property, please pay attention to respect the owners.
