Description

🌲🧗‍♀️⛰️🧗‍♀️⛰️🌲🌲🌲🪨🌲🌲🪨🌲🌲
Ylästö is a large crag situated in right next to a suburban neighbourhood. Thus access is easy, parking is close and the paths are nice. The majority of routes here are in the grade 5-6B range, but go as low as 3 and as high as 7B+ with Buzz Me Honey, the crag's hardest route.

About climbing and sector info:
The climbing in Ylästö comes in a wide range of quality. The climbing styles are also nice and varied: Voodoo has some overhanging routes, while Red Sector left holds some quality slabs. The climbing at Phobos, Eläintarha and Bluessector is mostly crimpy and vertical. Deimos has some decent, but very short routes. Voodoo sector arguably holds the best quality of rock and routes. Phobos has some really sharp rock, and the other sectors are mostly in between. All the walls in the west side get tons of sun and thus usually dry quickly. Voodoo is a bit of an exception, and receives shade, making it nicer to climb during heat.

Moss situation:
As most sectors at the crag have been quite overlooked for multiple years, many of them are currently covered in a ton of moss. Eläintarha and Bluessector are currently nearly impossible to climb at without hardcore cleaning efforts. Both of them hold some 'historical classics' though, so it might very well be worth it for the motivated individual! Red Sector Left & Right are slightly less covered in moss, and thus mostly climbable. Voodoo and the two Boulders in the forest are in a great shape moss-wise.

Unclimbed sectors:
The crag also has some unclimbed sectors, namely on the south side of Eläintarha and on both sides of Bluessector. Any aspiring route developer is free to pick up a brush and make some first ascents!

🦇🔦⛰🛖⛰
One other notable thing about this crag; for those climbers who enjoy caving there is a small cave located a few meters from the top of the Voodoo -sector. Check the photos of the crag if you are interested! A photo shows the location exactly.^

History

Ylästö has seen climbing activity for over 20+ years now. Along the years the topo for Ylästö has been kept up by multiple different individuals and organizations. It now has landed in 27 Crags. Most routes' first ascensionists and years have been lost to time, except the names of a few ascensionists for some notable routes.

The most notable ascents were made by Tomi Nytorp, with Buzz Me Honey, 7B+, H. Pöyry with Flash Gordon, 7B and A. Johansson with Pullman, 7A+. These were all done during the crag's infancy, in around 2000-2010.

At around 2011-2017, Phobos and Deimos, the two boulders in the forest were added to the topo. First ascents were made mostly by Tuomas Niemi-Aro, Atte Heiskanen, Sami Laakkonen and Mattias H.

In 2024 the topo was updated by A. Asikainen, as most of the GPS locations of the sectors were way off and this very hard to find. In 2025, VUK ry found the old Lyseo-topo for Ylästö, and began work to add the routes lost to time and added more info to upgrade the topo from free to a premium quality one.
